The House of Lords has recently acquired a series of paintings that show the best of Britain across the regions. These are displayed in Fielden House close to the Palace of Westminster , which provides additional office accommodation and meeting rooms for Peers and staff of the house. It was designed in a neo-Georgian style by Victor Heal and completed in 1937.
Artists from across the regions were approached by the House of Lords curatorial team to submit original paintings that they felt best represented their chosen region. These were judged as part of an informal competition running over two years.
Inspired by the 1930s architecture of the building the new works were to draw on the style of the inter-war railway travel posters so loved by the British public.
The Tutbury Castle design, painting by up and coming artist Glen Badham, was chosen to represent the Midlands . Vibrant and powerful, the painting perfectly captures the nostalgia of the 1930s with a twist of modern.
The lovely 11th century Castle is the property of the Duchy of Lancaster and forms part of the 11,000 acre Needwood Estate in Staffordshire.
Why did Glen Badham choose Tutbury Castle ? – he married there a few years ago so it really is the heart of England for him! |
