8pm Concert in St. Mary’s Prior Church

Belper Singers is a mixed chamber choir of approximately 30 voices. Our current repertoire includes both sacred and secular music drawn from between the 16th and 21st centuries. The choir performs a regular and varied programme in venues around Derbyshire, from local churches to historic houses. Recent concerts have included Vivaldi's Gloria, Pizzetti's Requiem, Byrd's Mass in Four Parts and Five Negro Spirituals from Tippett's  “A Child of Our Time”, with appearances at Haddon Hall and Choral Evensong at Derby Cathedral.

Mitchell Holland has directed Belper Singers since May 2012. He is currently Director of Music at St John Baptist, Berkswell, visiting lecturer in performance and conducting at the University of Wolverhampton, teacher of vocals and percussion at Nether Stowe High School and Musical Director of several choirs. He completed his postgraduate studies in 2013, working under Kevin Stannard and Richard Laing. A keen composer and arranger, in 2014 Mitch was commissioned to write a work for the Lichfield Area RSCM Choirs' Festival. He is enjoying a growing reputation as a choral writer, choral director, pianist and accompanist.

Renaissance is our theme for this contemplative, pre-Easter concert in the sublime setting of the Priory Church of St Mary the Virgin. The programme of English and European a capella music of the 16th Century includes well-known favourites  Allegri's Miserere and Byrd's Ave Verum Corpus with works by Tallis, Palestrina, Tomas Louis de Victoria, Orlando de Lassus and others. We will be joined by Dr Gareth Williams and his lap harp, one of the classic instruments of antiquity.
